Fig Cookies

1 cup chopped figs
2/3 cup water
1/2 tsp soda
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg, unbeaten
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2cup nuts (optional)
1 tsp salt
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp allspice
1/8 tsp ginger


Add water to figs. Boil 5 minutes. Cool and add soda. Set aside. Add sugar to shortening, cream. Add egg and beat well. Add vanilla and cooled fig mixture. Stir flour with salt, baking powder and spices, and add, mixing well. Stir in nuts. Drop by tsp. on greased baking sheet and bake at 375 for 15 minutes.
