Colorado Kraut Burgers

1 package yeast
2 cups warm water
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
6 1/2 cups flour (approx.)

2-3 tbsp butter or margarine, melted
2 lbs meat (ground beef)
2 onions
2 garlic cloves
6 cups chopped cabbage
1/2 cup water
1 beef bouillon cube
1 tsp oregano leaves
1/2 tsp cumin

Mix filling ingredients in pan. Cover and cook until juices are cooked away (about 20 minutes). Cool to room temperature and set aside.

Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup water. Let stand 5 minutes. In bowl, combine 1 3/4 cup water, sugar, salt, shortening, yeast, and 2 cups of flour. Mix 5 minutes. Cover bowl, let stand until bubbly (30-40 minutes). Add 4 more cups of flour, one at a time. Turn out and knead 5 minutes. Put in bowl, cover and let rise almost double.

Punch down and roll out 1/2" to 12 x 24 (6" squares). Fill dough squares with pre-cooked ground beef and cabbage mixture. Cover with plastic wrap for 20-30 minutes. Bake at 375 for 20-30 minutes. Brush with melted better, cool and serve.
